Graded readers vs real books: when to switch

Graded readers and original books serve different purposes. One gives you carefully controlled language; the other gives you the author’s full story, vocabulary and style. You can use both as your reading ability grows.

What graded readers are good for

Graded readers are written or adapted for learners at particular stages. Familiar vocabulary and shorter sentences can make it easier to read for longer without constant dictionary breaks. They are a useful way to build confidence and reading fluency.

Why try an original book?

Original books expose you to natural voice, richer detail and the language people choose for real audiences. They can also be motivating when you already care about the author, story or subject. The trade-off is that difficulty is less controlled: one chapter may be comfortable and the next may introduce a lot of unfamiliar language.

There is no single level at which you must switch

Try a page from an original book and see whether you can follow the main events while reading at a steady pace. You do not need to understand every word. If you lose the thread repeatedly, keep graded readers in your routine and revisit the original later.

A middle path: adapted books

An adapted book starts with a real text and adjusts its language for a target level. This can let you explore a book you chose while keeping the original story in view. Adaptation quality matters: simpler wording should still preserve the source’s key meaning, and the result should be checked rather than trusted on a level label alone.

GradusReader is an in-progress reading app for adapting books to CEFR A2, B1 or B2. You can compare a sample passage and see how its checks work.
